Couch To 5K

Ran for 5 minutes today and walked for 5. I didn’t feel like I had had much of a work out but my lungs felt like they were going to explode. Is this normal? I was following a plan from Serpentine org for beginners and there is lots of helpful info on there. However, I am opting for a plan called Couch to 5K  which will get me up to 2 miles 3x a week  in only 2 months. I would love to be able to run the 5 k for ‘Race for Life’ next year.

I’ve also signed up for Women's Running an online website to log my activity. It is UK based which means I can use the maps and actually see what distance I have covered on each run.  So here’s to 10 lbs lighter, one dress size lower and a whole other host of fitness benefits. More on my progress later.

Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining

OK, so we are in June and STILL waiting for summer and trying hard not to blink in case we miss it, (it really is THAT bad). Wellies and rain macs have become summer habit and clothing stores bulge at the seems with sunny attire that might never see the light of day. My garden looks like we may as well buy a mountain goat and be done with it. However, one can’t help but notice the full colorful blooms burgeoning garden fences as a result of the continual down pouring.

Feed Your Family For Under 50

I am a fan of online shopping. For several reasons but mostly because I hate grocery shopping!  I find sitting at my computer to select what I want far less taxing and if you are savvy about it it can actually be cost effective.

However  one of the disadvantages of home shopping is that it can be uninspiring when it comes to meal planning. In the past I have recommended ‘The Resourceful Cook’ and I have also used cookery books to plan my week ahead. However, I am delighted to tell you about Sainsbury's New online Meal Plan. Their slogan is ‘Feed Your Family for Under 50’. They have one set of meal plans for the week and it is for a family of four. It includes a simple plan for breakfast lunch and dinner and then with a click of a button produces the shopping list for you to purchase.

I have not found a way to cut and substitute meals but rather had to do that manually when it came to ordering the food. However, the meals are so basic and simple it was not hard to do. So I am giving it a whirl this week and  it cut down the legwork (or computer work!). Well done Sainsbury.

Long Sleeves and Maxi Dresses No Thanks!

I went clothes shopping this afternoon and instead of buying something lovely I came back thinking how shockingly overweight I looked. I know my clothes size has gone up one size in the last ten years and after trying, unsuccessfully, to lose weight I decided this was the new mature me and I was going to make the best of it. Well, after seeing my arms and legs in a 3 way mirror lately I decided NO there has to be another way. I do not want to live out my prime in long sleeves and maxi dresses (even if they are in fashion).

After a bit of research I picked up some pointers.

1. There is no way of getting around healthy eating. It is a must.

  • I don’t have the energy to plan ahead and keep a journal so I think the best for me is if it is not healthy don’t put it in my mouth.
  • secondly, positive thinking works best for me so if I concentrate on what I should eat and not on what I shouldn’t I can succeed. I find it fairly simple to concentrate on 5 fruits and veg, 8 cups h2o, dairy and protein. So this is the way to go for me.

2. I have been walking 20 minutes a day for the last 6 months and although I have felt the health benefits I have not seen any weight loss. SO, it is time to turn it up a notch.

  • Several articles have said that the best way to lose weight on your legs is running. At 49 it might not be advisable to start but I am going to do a little more research and that might be the way to go.
  • For arms it is weight training and again a little more research will get me started.

I’m posting this for accountability sake. I am sorry if this is a little more personal detail than you intended to get!  However, maybe you have something to share that helps you? Or maybe some one out there would like to join me in a challenge or a buddy post? I am sure we could come up with something exciting to get us to shed those inches for what is left of the summer?! Any takers?

Taste of London

We were blessed to be able to attend the ‘Taste of London’ after being given some tickets. It rained non stop. I thought the weather would deter people but it was VERY well attended. Foodies were out in full force donned in wellies and raincoats.

Exhibitors ranged from fancy London restaurants to local businesses.

Lots of delicacies for sale and samples to try.

I had to get a pic of these lovelies. Cupcake-A-Licious

Singing in the Rain…Not!

After walking to work in a torrential downpour this morning I got soaked right down to my undies! A great start to an important day. We had been planning a parent info meeting about speech and language for about two months. Lots of planning had gone into it and today was the big day.

I went to bed earlier than usual, woke up bright and early, did my hair, nails and legs, and was ready for the challenge.  Not only did I get soaked but the Speech and language Therapist was detained because her car died in the downpour. The morning session was a wash out resulting in only 50% of the parents coming for the second meeting. Ah well, it’s all in a days work and now I am at home having a cuppa’ and relaxing with Lilly.

Family Vacation

One tradition we have begun with the York family whilst visiting Florida is to enjoy an afternoon at John Chestnut Park. Fishing, BBQ., and investigating the wildlife together is so much fun. This is what memories are all about!

Broken Sensor?

As some of you know, I have been contemplating upgrading from my Fuji Film Finepix J50. D-SLR in Focus, guest series. WELL, I am really sad to say, that now I don’t have much option because it suddenly stopped working whilst I was on Hol’s. It is only one year old (I think) and I did want to keep it as a purse camera. When I shoot a picture it lets so much light in that the final image is white. I did ask at my local Jessops and they suggested it might be the sensor. How annoying, especially seeing as the Fuji we bought 10 years ago is still going strong.

The Weeks Activities

Took one look at the weather at the beginning of the week and felt a little daunted about the weeks activities. We had five days of camping in Wales ahead of us. The Idealist in me would love to be a camper but in reality I am not. Fortunately we were able to get a small caravan and didn’t have to sleep in a tent.

We were spending the time away as part of a team so it was, best foot forward and try to suck it up, as graciously as I could.  Well, God was good to me. The weather vastly improved as the week went on. Food was good and plentiful, the teaching was refreshing, company was great and we had lots of fun.

I go through this every year. I always dread it and then have the time of my life. I go back to work tomorrow and haven’t had much rest but the experiences make it worth the sacrifice.  I saw my son climbing rocks, get out of bed as the cock crows to meet his friends, take part in a stage production, jump 20ft off a bridge into the rapids, and generally have a blast. Hubby and  I got to connect with God, old friends, and nature AND Lilly got to hang out with us for the week.

You’ve Been Framed

Still processing the photos from Easter Hol’s. It was such a special time that I don’t want to neglect those precious memories. Hobby Craft were having a sale on photo frames so I picked up what I needed. I also bought a cardboard “Y” which I coated with black paint.

I Am So Proud Of You Son

I am so proud of my son. He loves challenges and rises to the occasion. Especially at Boys Brigade. He wanted to win ‘Best Private Award’ again this year but they gave it to someone else. He said, “I am kind of surprised he got it but I am happy for him” I am so proud of you son.

However, he did get best squadron award.
